Fullback Hardlife Zvirekwi was this week crowned the Zimbabwe 2016 Soccer Star of the Year.
Zvirekwi’s year was capped in style by being selected the best player in the Zimbabwe Professional Soccer League for the just-ended term following a dream season in which he helped Cup Kings Caps United to a first league title in 11 years.
He beat to the podium his Caps United veteran teammate and the season’s top goal-scorer Leonard Tsipa, who came as first runner-up while FC Platinum goalkeeper Petros Mhari was the second runner-up.
In being crowned Soccer Star of the Year, Zvirekwi takes over the mettle from Golden Arrows midfielder Danny Phiri who won it last year while with Chicken Inn.
With Zvirekwi being part of the squad that helped the Warriors qualify for 2017 Afcon, he is likely to make it into the squad to travel to Gabon.
He has established himself as Warriors coach Calisto Pasuwa first choice right-back, Zvirekwi’s confidence has been boosted by this week’s crowning moment.
“I am happy to be selected as Soccer Star of the Year and as a player you are always encouraged when some people appreciate your work. It pushes you to work harder and want to achieve more,” Zvirekwi said.
“I transferred to the national team the hard work I put in at club level and I now hope I will be part of the team to go to Gabon. It is up to the coach to select me. If I am selected I will go to Gabon with so much confidence because I know that locally I am appreciated.”
Zvirekwi’s coach at Caps United Lloyd Chitembwe was named Coach of the Year at the awards while Highlanders teenage striker Prince Dube was selected as Rookie of the Year.
FC Platinum goalkepper Mhari was named the best goalkeeper of the season and Ruzive Ruzive was voted referee of the year.
